How to choose the right duvet without wasting time and money

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear about a healthy lifestyle? Probably some kind of special diet combined with physical activity. It's good to work on your sports preparation and go on a proper diet, but if you really want to be in top shape, you should also think about sleep. How healthy and energetic you will be depends on its quantity and, above all, on its quality.

What is your duvet size and what to do if you can't find it?

One of the things that stimulates quality sleep and a full night's sleep is providing comfort in the bedroom. Only in this way can the body relax, which helps to fall asleep quickly and sleep soundly. Investing in quality products always pays off 100%. This is fully true when buying a duvet and even more so a duvet filled with down. There are several basic criteria by which to choose the right one for you.

The first question you should have a ready answer to when you decide to shop is what your size is. Or in other words - how long and how wide should the duvet be in order to feel comfortable. First of all, decide whether you want a single or double and only then start measuring.

The two most popular sizes among single duvets are 140x200 cm and 150x220 cm. Which one you choose depends mostly on your own height and build. For a larger figure, a larger size will create more comfort, as it will completely envelop the body. Before buying, think about what will make you feel really good.

For double duvets, the preferences are for 200x220 or 240x220. If there are two of you and you want a common duvet, the larger one will provide you with more freedom of movement during sleep. These are important details and underestimating them can lead to a waste of time and money in searching for the right duvet.

Although the most common, these sizes do not limit the individual preferences that everyone may have.

At Poohy, we will be happy to meet the expectations of even the most demanding customers. The experienced seamstresses in our studio will gladly make a duvet according to the requested dimensions. If you want a product different from those we offer, call or write to us - we will be happy to do it.

Choose a duvet 30-40 cm larger than the bed

When calculating how big a duvet to buy, don't miss out on another thing that you absolutely must take into account. Always keep in mind the size of the bed or mattress itself. The rule of thumb is that the duvet should be 30-40 cm wider and longer than the mattress.

In addition to ensuring comfort and being more aesthetically pleasing, it also prevents air from going under the duvet, which would lead to unpleasant temperature changes when sleeping.

The natural properties of goose or duck down filling

Now is the time to choose the ingredient that gives you the feeling of a cloud hug while sleeping. It is time to learn more about the filling that makes a lightweight down duvet soft, airy and fluffy. It is the filling that determines the quality and durability of the duvet. The more precisely you select it, the longer and happier you will wake up rested and ready to easily cope with your daily duties.

At Poohy, thanks to the rich experience and knowledge we have, we have learned to respect the natural properties and quality of down, such as its thermoregulation and its ability to wick moisture. We know a lot about its lightness and volume, which create this unique fluffiness of the material.

We truly respect the authentic origin and nobility of natural goose down and feathers, which have been used for generations to make high-quality duvets. It has many undeniable advantages, including these two - its durability is greater than synthetic products, and its rarity makes it an exceptional product, unlike any other in nature.

Which one is better to be more – down or feathers, and what is the difference?

You’ve probably noticed that down in a duvet is often accompanied by feathers. They’re not there by chance. Their purpose is to add weight and elasticity to the product. The more feathers there are in a duvet, the heavier it is and the cheaper it is. And vice versa – the more down content, as a ratio of down to feathers, the lighter the duvet.

If you want a heavier and warmer duvet, check out this one. If you’re after lightness and luxury, check out our duvet models with 100% goose down or a duvet with 100% duck down. For a more budget-friendly option, without compromising on comfort and fluffiness, choose our Basic down and feather duvet.

At Poohy, we fully master the process of properly mixing down and feathers to achieve the most satisfactory ratio. Of course, in addition to the ratio of down to feathers, the quality of the down filling and its filling power (volume) also plays an important role. The higher it is, the lighter, warmer and more comfortable the duvet is. Learn more about the quality of down here.

We carry out precise control and selection of raw materials and carefully monitor all processes of their processing, hygiene, cleanliness, washing, sterilization and sorting. This way we always manage to provide the best filling for our duvets, without damaging the delicate down and without changing its characteristics.

In addition to the good management and production practices we have, it is important for us that we share the principles of animal welfare. The goose down we use for our products comes from animals raised for meat. Not a single bird was harmed due to down and feather harvesting.

How many blankets do you need during the year and can you get by with just one?

Here is another question, the answer to which depends on what kind of duvet you will please yourself or your family with. How to choose the warmth level of the duvet and do you know what the filling weight should be? The latter is measured in grams per square meter and the weight of the duvet corresponds to the weight of the filling. The higher the weight, the warmer the duvet.

Keep in mind that to provide the same warmth, a natural down duvet is many times lighter than a synthetic one. At the same time, the higher the percentage of down compared to feathers in a duvet, the lighter it is. And now you need to decide which duvet suits you best, according to the season in which you will use it.

If you are one of those people who likes warmer rooms and in the summer you sleep at a temperature above 23-24 degrees, then summer duvets are for you. Is it possible to use only one duvet all year round? Of course, if you maintain a temperature in the bedroom between 18 and 22 degrees at all times. Then one is definitely enough for you, and this is the spring-autumn duvet. Once you are used to the thermometer in the bedroom showing between 14 and 18 degrees, your favorite duvet is the warm one.

For extreme temperatures below 14 degrees, it is best to get a very warm one. If even with this you are still cold, just give us a call. We can always add more filling to your duvet and make it the way you want it, and you will only pay the difference in price.

There are temptations for a lifetime – designed to provide pleasure for a long period of time. To make sure that your duck or goose down duvets are like that, choose them to be wrapped in densely woven fabrics that are designed not to let the filling in. These are the so-called Downproof fabrics. At Poohy we mainly use 100% cotton percale, and for more luxurious fillings it can be 100% cotton-satin.

Whenever you have the opportunity, choose natural fabrics. They are more ecological, breathable and create that unique feeling in the bedroom that energizes and makes sleep so sweet.
